https://www.reddit.com/r/exjw/comments/5mlgsm/2017_yearbook_of_jehovahs_witnesses/.
overall the numbers are better than last year (1.8% growth compared to 1.5% last year -- as i predicted ;-) ) with an increase in all major figures including 1300 more congregations (i assume this is not physical kingdom halls?).

Remember 20-odd years ago the UN declared a year of peace and security? (or something very close). I remember them making a big deal of it at the district convention. - SIMON
Actually, that was 30 years ago (1986) and yes I do remember being at Yankee Stadium and hearing that talk and seeing the release of "Worldwide Security Under the Prince of Peace." I was 16 years old, and coming to the realization that this old system was ready to kick the bucket -- wouldn't make it more than another five years. Based upon what I heard there, and the pressure of my mother and congregation elders, I decided against college and started pioneering out of high school.
A BELIEVER - Were you at that convention? Were you even born then? Some excellent information on the UN presented there. You would have loved it. . . .. until you found out it was all bullshit.

Thanks SIR82. What you're saying sounds right. Perhaps I'm blurring the 70s and 80s.
One thing I do know is that after any DF-ing in the 80s, there was a "local needs" given right after the announcement that outlined the "crimes" (to use Scientology parlance) of the DF'd person (usually fornication).
That's the kind of stuff lawsuits are made of nowadays.

They actually read out loud the reasons for DF'ing a person? WOW! How disgusting!
Oh yeah! And if my memory serves me, they did this at least into the 80s (1980s not 1880s ;) ).
If someone else can confirm this, that would be great.

Fun fact regarding the "Caduceus" medical symbol (the snake wrapped around a pole):
Before the ancient Romans and Greeks (about 2612 B.C.), older representations from Syria and India of sticks and animals looking like serpents or worms are interpreted as a direct representation of traditional treatment of Dracunculiasis, the Guinea worm disease
From:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caduceus_as_a_symbol_of_medicine
Learned that in HS biology class.
Betcha there's a pretty gross video out there of the "traditional treatment" (pulling one of these things out by wrapping it around a stick). Not really interested in seeing that myself today. . . . -

"Historical" Announcement This Week?
by headisspinning inmy daughter asked if anyone has heard anything about a 'big announcement' being made sometime this week in congregations in canada and possibly beyond... in her words "it's like a biggggg long thing, they cut out part of the book study for it and people heard it was a historical thing"... any ideas?
could it be the mexican branch closing or the theme of the convention?
or something else?

This convention marks the 90th anniversary of Rutherford's landmark proclamation of Jehovah's 6th trumpet-like judgement. . . . .

If the WT is a "money making machine"...who gets the money?
by NikL ini've seen claims over the years that wt is in the real estate, book publishing business and is a for profit enterprise at it's core.. can those of you that believe this to be the case tell me who benefits from all this wealth?.
the governing body lives in relatively humble conditions no?.
i've been curious about this for a while.

I don't know. . . I don't think the WT is really a "money making machine" but a fundamentalist doomsday cult that has just happened to amass wealth by taking financial advantage of its gullible followers. Hell, they abuse people emotionally, spiritually, etc. . . . . why not financially?
I think these wackos at the top really think that the "riches" they've amassed are for Jehovah. . . no one really directly benefits from the money/real estate, other than having all of life's necessities -- and a few nice perks -- provided for them.
